Getting around

We have some wonderful green spaces in Berwick – for instance the parks, the ramparts, the golf course and the riverside. Individuals, businesses and residents’ groups in Castlegate, the Greenses, Tweedmouth and Spittal are becoming increasingly involved in maintaining and improving these green areas.

The very best way to see the town is by taking a walk round the unique circuit of Elizabethan Walks. It takes about an hour at an easy strolling pace, and that allows time to take in the spectacular views! English Heritage have provided informative interpretive panels at key points aliong the route.

Access via ramps means that the walk around the Walls can be enjoyed by anyone.

The approaches to most pavement crossings in the town are felt underfoot with studded paving and dropped kerbs.

One of the joys of Berwick is the number of benches around the Walls and all around the town, which offer opportunities for taking a rest while shopping or just to pass the time of day. Look out for the traditional Berwick serpent seats, which are a particular feature of the townscape.

We have excellent facilities for anyone travelling to or from Berwick.

Our railway station is now officially titled a “Public Transport interchange”. Click here to Leave The Car Behind!

There are frequent direct rail services to the South, the Midlands and the South West, as well as to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the north of Scotland.

The Interchange also provides bus links to the towns of the Scottish Borders and southwards through Northumberland.

Local bus services run to most of the main villages of our hinterland.

It sometimes takes a little planning in advance, but you really can leave the car behind when you choose to visit Berwick!
