The town has a twice-weekly Charter Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays), a Farmers’ Market on the last Sunday of every month, and stages occasional fairs and festivals.

The annual programme of activities and events in the district ranges from traditional customs such as the annual Riding of the Bounds and the Crowning of the Salmon Queen to community festivals like those in Seahouses and Glendale, and special celebrations such as 2008's Golden Age of Northumbria Festival.
