What is Cittaslow?

A Cittaslow town aims to maintain and develop its distinctiveness and the quality of life enjoyed by its residents and the people who come to visit or work there. It seeks to combine the elements of tradition with the benefits of modern technologies, intelligently applied. Regeneration and re-use are the priorities, rather than modernisation and re-development for the sake of change.

The Cittaslow Movement originated in Italy and has grown to embrace over 100 towns in countries throughout the world.

Only towns with a population of less than 50,000 are eligible for membership of the Cittaslow Movement.

Berwick-upon-Tweed was the sixth of nine towns in the United Kingdom to gain Cittaslow status.
